Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Readings for the Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin MaryReading 1  JER 3:14-17 Return, rebellious children, says the LORD, for I am your Master; I will take you, one from a city, two from a clan, and bring you to Zion. I will appoint over you shepherds after my own heart, who will shepherd you wisely and prudently. When you multiply and become fruitful in the land, says the LORD, They will in those days no longer say, “The ark of the covenant of the LORD!” They will no longer think of it, or remember it,  or miss it, or make another. At that time they will call Jerusalem the LORD’s throne; there all nations will be gathered together to honor the name of the LORD at Jerusalem, and they will walk no longer in their hardhearted wickedness. Responsorial Psalm  JER 31:10, 11-12ABCD, 13 R. (see 10d) The Lord will guard us as a shepherd guards his flock.Hear the word of the LORD, O nations, proclaim it on distant isles, and say:He who scattered Israel, now gathers them together,he guards them as a shepherd his flock. R. The Lord will guard us as a shepherd guards his flock. The LORD shall ransom Jacob,he shall redeem him from the hand of his conqueror.Shouting, they shall mount the heights of Zion, they shall come streaming to the LORD’s blessings:The grain, the wine, and the oil,the sheep and the oxen.R. The Lord will guard us as a shepherd guards his flock. Then the virgins shall make merry and dance, and young men and old as well.I will turn their mourning into joy,I will console and gladden them after their sorrows.R. The Lord will guard us as a shepherd guards his flock. Alleluia  LK 8:15 R. Alleluia, alleluia.Blessed are they who have kept the word with a generous heartand yield a harvest through perseverance.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel  MT 13:18-23 Jesus said to his disciples: “Hear the parable of the sower. The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the Kingdom without understanding it, and the Evil One comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away. The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.” - - -Lectionary for Mass for Use in the Dioceses of the United States, second typical edition, Copyright © 2001, 1998, 1997, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine; Psalm refrain © 1968, 1981, 1997, International Committee on English in the Liturgy, Inc. Feast of Saint James, Apostle

Reading 1 2 Cor 4:7-15 Brothers and sisters:We hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us.We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained;perplexed, but not driven to despair;persecuted, but not abandoned;struck down, but not destroyed;always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus,so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body. For we who live are constantly being given up to deathfor the sake of Jesus,so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.Since, then, we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, I believed, therefore I spoke,we too believe and therefore speak, knowing that the one who raised the Lord Jesuswill raise us also with Jesusand place us with you in his presence.Everything indeed is for you,so that the grace bestowed in abundance on more and more peoplemay cause the thanksgiving to overflow for the glory of God. Responsorial Psalm Ps 126:1bc-2ab, 2cd-3, 4-5, 6 R. (5) Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing. When the LORD brought back the captives of Zion,we were like men dreaming. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with rejoicing. R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing. Then they said among the nations,"The LORD has done great things for them."The LORD has done great things for us;we are glad indeed.R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.Restore our fortunes, O LORD,like the torrents in the southern desert. Those that sow in tearsshall reap rejoicing.R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.Although they go forth weeping, carrying the seed to be sown,They shall come back rejoicing, carrying their sheaves. R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing. Alleluia See Jn 15:16 R. Alleluia, alleluia.I chose you from the world,to go and bear fruit that will last, says the Lord.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Mt 20:20-28 The mother of the sons of Zebedee approached Jesus with her sonsand did him homage, wishing to ask him for something. He said to her,"What do you wish?"She answered him,"Command that these two sons of mine sit,one at your right and the other at your left, in your Kingdom."Jesus said in reply,"You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?"They said to him, "We can."He replied,"My chalice you will indeed drink, but to sit at my right and at my left, this is not mine to givebut is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."When the ten heard this, they became indignant at the two brothers. But Jesus summoned them and said,"You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you.Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be servedbut to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many." - - -Lectionary for Mass for Use in the Dioceses of the United States, second typical edition, Copyright © 2001, 1998, 1997, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine; Psalm refrain © 1968, 1981, 1997, International Committee on English in the Liturgy, Inc. Reading 1 Jer 1:1, 4-10 The words of Jeremiah, son of Hilkiah,of a priestly family in Anathoth, in the land of Benjamin. The word of the LORD came to me thus:Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you,a prophet to the nations I appointed you.“Ah, Lord GOD!” I said,"I know not how to speak; I am too young.”But the LORD answered me,Say not, “I am too young.”To whomever I send you, you shall go;whatever I command you, you shall speak.Have no fear before them, because I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD.Then the LORD extended his hand and touched my mouth, saying,See, I place my words in your mouth! This day I set youover nations and over kingdoms,To root up and to tear down,to destroy and to demolish,to build and to plant. Responsorial Psalm Ps 71:1-2, 3-4a, 5-6ab, 15 and 17 R. (see 15ab) I will sing of your salvation. In you, O LORD, I take refuge;let me never be put to shame. In your justice rescue me, and deliver me;incline your ear to me, and save me.R. I will sing of your salvation.Be my rock of refuge,a stronghold to give me safety, for you are my rock and my fortress.O my God, rescue me from the hand of the wicked.R. I will sing of your salvation. For you are my hope, O Lord;my trust, O God, from my youth. On you I depend from birth;from my mother’s womb you are my strength.R. I will sing of your salvation. My mouth shall declare your justice, day by day your salvation.O God, you have taught me from my youth, and till the present I proclaim your wondrous deeds.R. I will sing of your salvation. Alleluia R. Alleluia, alleluia. The seed is the word of God, Christ is the sower;all who come to him will live for ever.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Mt 13:1-9 On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea.Such large crowds gathered around himthat he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying:“A sower went out to sow.And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up.Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil.It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it.But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit,a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.Whoever has ears ought to hear.” Readings for the Optional Memorial of Saint Sharbel Makhlūf, priest - - -Lectionary for Mass for Use in the Dioceses of the United States, second typical edition, Copyright © 2001, 1998, 1997, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine; Psalm refrain © 1968, 1981, 1997, International Committee on English in the Liturgy, Inc. Tuesday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Reading 1  MI 7:14-15, 18-20 Shepherd your people with your staff, the flock of your inheritance,That dwells apart in a woodland,in the midst of Carmel.Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead,as in the days of old;As in the days when you came from the land of Egypt, show us wonderful signs.Who is there like you, the God who removes guiltand pardons sin for the remnant of his inheritance;Who does not persist in anger forever, but delights rather in clemency,And will again have compassion on us,treading underfoot our guilt? You will cast into the depths of the seaall our sins; You will show faithfulness to Jacob, and grace to Abraham,As you have sworn to our fathersfrom days of old. Responsorial Psalm PS 85:2-4, 5-6, 7-8 R. (8a) Lord, show us your mercy and love. You have favored, O LORD, your land;you have brought back the captives of Jacob. You have forgiven the guilt of your people;you have covered all their sins. You have withdrawn all your wrath;you have revoked your burning anger. R. Lord, show us your mercy and love.Restore us, O God our savior, and abandon your displeasure against us.Will you be ever angry with us,prolonging your anger to all generations?R. Lord, show us your mercy and love. Will you not instead give us life;and shall not your people rejoice in you?Show us, O LORD, your kindness, and grant us your salvation. R. Lord, show us your mercy and love. Alleluia  JN 14:23 R. Alleluia, alleluia.Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love himand we will come to him.R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel  MT 12:46-50 While Jesus was speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers appeared outside, wishing to speak with him. Someone told him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, asking to speak with you.” But he said in reply to the one who told him, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.” Readings for the Optional Memorial of Saint Bridget of Sweden, religious - - -Lectionary for Mass for Use in the Dioceses of the United States, second typical edition, Copyright © 2001, 1998, 1997, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine; Psalm refrain © 1968, 1981, 1997, International Committee on English in the Liturgy, Inc.
